Amino Acids
Proteins are among the essential nutrients that we must ingest every day if we are to maintain health. The minimum intake depends on body size, rate of growth and whether you are ill. Unlike the fats and carbohydrates, you cannot reduce your protein intake without causing almost immediate health problems.
Proteins are composed of long chains of building blocks called amino acids. There are around 20 amino acids, some of which are essential. These are the ones that the body cannot manufacture, but which are nonetheless necessary for health. These include leucine, isoleucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan and valine. Amino acids exist in all living cells and chains of amino acids make up protein. They make up a great portion of our skin, hair, nails, muscle tissue and internal organs. Our brain and heart are especially high in protein. The body uses amino acids in the production of neurotransmitters in the brain, several hormones, a variety of enzyme and metabolic processes, the formation of antibodies, as well as for the production of non-essential amino acids.
